AIPM 2008 Abstract Guidelines

The single most important thing about an Abstract is that it is a short document that is intended to capture the interest of a potential reader of the paper. In a very important sense it is a marketing document for the full paper. If the Abstract is poorly written or if it is boring then it will not encourage a potential reader to spend the time reading the work.

Thus the first rule of Abstract writing is that it should engage the reader by telling him or her what the paper is about and why they should read it.  Although strictly not part of the Abstract, the title of the proposed paper is most important.  Short attention-catching titles are the most effective. However, it is also important, for a conference paper, to ensure that the title describes the subject one is writing about.

With regards to the body, the Abstract should contain a clear statement of the topic of the paper and the appeal of the paper. If presenting a research based paper, please state the research question. One needs to say how the research was/is being undertaken.  For example, is it empirical or theoretical?  Is it quantitative or qualitative?  Perhaps it follows the critical research method.  What value are your findings and to whom will they be of use? If presenting a practical or applied paper, please state why and how practitioners would benefit from the material.

The Abstract should then briefly describe the work to be discussed in the paper and also give a concise summary of the contents.  The Abstract should not include diagrams and in general references are not required in the Abstract.

The marketing of the proposed paper needs to be done within the word limit of 250 words. The application system will accept more than 250 words, but these will not be read by the committee.

There is also an expectation to provide key words within the Abstract. Key words are used to find the paper, especially during computerised searches. 5 keywords may be provided after the body of the abstract and should be the words which most closely reflect the content of the paper.

Peer Review is available to candidates. People requesting this service should request it when they submit their abstract. Peer review will require earlier submission of the full paper.

Finally, the author must nominate the preferred stream for the abstract, i.e. select from “People, Projects, Performance, Promise” and their associated substreams.

Abstract guidelines based on http://academic-conferences.org/abstract-guidelines.htm

Acceptance Criteria for Abstracts

Abstracts must be no more than 250 words outlining the purpose, methods, results, and conclusions of the paper. It is important that abstracts communicate ideas effectively and use standard English. Authors whose first language is not English may be counselled on correct spelling / punctuation / grammar.

Abstracts must be relevant to “Project Management” per se and the theme and streams of the conference.  Authors must provide an indication of the stream they anticipate the paper to be accepted in.

Key words: 5 Key Words should be provided after the body of the abstract.

Purpose: Is the scope of the issue provided, what is and why is it an issue? What is the historical background to the issue, and what is the impact of it?

Methods: The methodology, approach, and experimental design should be appropriately outlined and should include, if applicable, sample size and/or number of trials.

Results: An outline of results or findings should be provided.

Conclusion: Key recommendations or arguments should be summarized.

Literature reviews without extracting new information not previously known are not acceptable.
